After the Red Sox dropped the series opener to the rival New York Yankees in blowout fashion 8-1 last night, Boston gave it right back to the Yankees with an offensive barrage of their own, blowing out New York 11-0. Rafael Devers put on an offensive show as he came up big in the first inning and the offense took off from there. Boston got production from all parts of the lineup. The Red Sox ability to come up with clutch two-out hitting is what put this game out of reach early. It was a complete game for the Red Sox.

Chris Sale put together another great outing. His nasty offspeed pitch only surrendered one hit and one walk through seven innings.  He finished with eleven strikeouts.

After Sonny Gray retired Mookie Betts and Andrew Benintendi, Boston jumped all over New York’s right-hander.  J.D. Martinez extended the inning with a single up the middle of the diamond. Mitch Moreland drew a walk and Xander Bogaerts got on base with a single. Devers walked up to the plate with the bases loaded and deposited a ball into the left-field bleachers – putting the Sox ahead 4-0.

In the top of the second inning, with Boston already leading 4-0, Sandy Leon set the table with a leadoff double into right field.  Betts drew a walk off of Gray and  Benintendi drove in Leon with a single,  making the score 5-0. On Beni’s single, Betts went from first base to third base.  J.D.  drove in Betts with a sacrifice fly, finishing the inning with a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, while Sale was cruising on the mound, Jackie Bradley Jr. put up another web gem in the outfield against Aaron Hicks. Hicks hit a ball headed towards the right-center field fence and Jackie made a leaping catch to steal extra bases away from Hicks.

In the top of the 6th inning,  Bradley got on base with a single,  Betts drew a walk. The two-out hitting continued when J.D. came up with an RBI single, making the score 7-0.

Sandy Leon added on to Boston’s huge lead in the top of the seventh inning with a  two-out, two-run home run, swelling the lead to 9-0.

After Mookie kicked off the 8th inning with a double to left field, J.D. tacked on to the lead with an RBI single, driving in Mookie and making the lead 10-0.

The Red Sox continued to pile on in the top of 9th. After Rafael Devers hit a single to start the inning – Brock Holt drove in Devers to push the lead to 11-0.

Out of all the great performances that the Red Sox had tonight, Devers had the best.  He was a perfect 5 for 5 with a grand slam. He was a triple away from hitting for the cycle.

J.D. had another great game – and was overshadowed because of Devers’s perfect night. He was 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and one run scored.

Devers performance got Boston’s offense started on the right foot – and the Red Sox ability to come up with two out hits allowed them to tack on to a sizeable lead.  The rivalry series with the Yankees will conclude with the powerhouse matchup of Luis Severino and David Price.
