The narrative in past Chris Sale starts is the lack of run support he receives when he’s on the mound. In his last five starts, Boston’s offense has produced less than five runs. In Sunday’s series finale against the Seattle Mariners, the Red Sox put up a five spot while Chris struck out 13 Mariners. Boston used both used the long ball and played small ball to put together a series victory. Sunday’s victory not only gave the Red Sox a series win but clinched the season series against the Mariners.
Sale dominated his outing from the very first pitch. He came out of the gate throwing 98 MPH to Dee Gordon in the first inning. He went seven innings, only giving up four hits and one walk in his outing on Sunday.
The scoring began in the bottom of the fifth inning with a double down the third base line from Xander Bogaerts. Eduardo Nunez moved Bogey to third with a single up the middle of the field. Rafael Devers doubled into right field to drive in X to take the lead 1-0. Sandy Leon hit a sacrifice fly to center field to extend the lead 2-0. Jackie Bradley who had himself a good day hit a single to right field, moving Devers over to third. Mookie Betts hit a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Devers to push the lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mitch Moreland put two runs on the board with one swing. J.D. Martinez got on base with a single to right field. Moreland turned into Mitchy Four Bags with a home run to centerfield to push the score to 5-0 at the end of the inning.
After Sale pitch seven quality innings, Joe Kelly came into the game and pitched a scoreless top of the 8th inning. Matt Barnes came into the game in relief of Kelly to shut the door on the Mariners, 5-0.
Jackie great performance today. He went 3 for 3 with three singles including the single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
For Chris Sale, this is his fifth game with double-digit strikeouts; and it’s nice to see the offense give their ace some run support.
