Saturday’s matchup against the Atlanta Braves was exciting for one reason; Dustin Pedroia was back in the lineup.  Pedroia underwent knee surgery in October of last year and has been making rehab starts with Triple-A Pawtucket. Drew Pomeranz continues to struggle, to put it nicely, and the post-Hanley offense saved Pom from his bad start as they put up eight runs. Mitch Moreland and Andrew Benintendi had big games as they lead the offense to another Sox win.

Pomeranz continued to skid on Saturday. He only managed to throw 3.1 innings. Pom gave up six hits including a home run, walked three batters, and finished the day giving up five earned runs. He did not have a lively fastball-which sat in the high 80’s.  His knuckle curve was not sharp either.

In the top of the second inning,  Pom gave up a walk to Ender Inciarte. After he got Tyler Flowers and Johan Camargo out, “Big Smooth” gave up a two-run home run to Dansby Swanson who put a Pomeranz fastball into the Green Monster seats.  The Braves had a 2-0  lead in the middle of the second inning.

In the top of the third inning, Pomeranz gave up a two-out double to Nick Markakis. Kurt Suzuki came up next and hit an RBI double to left field to drive in Markakis and extend the lead 3-0.

The Sox offense came alive in the bottom of the third. After J.D. Martinez struck out, Mitchy three bags hit a triple into center field. Xander Bogaerts drove in Moreland to get on the board. the score was cut to 3-1. X went to second base on a passed ball by Suzuki, and Pedroia got on first with a walk. Blake Swihart came up to bat and drove in Bogey with an RBI single, making the score 3-2. Christian Vazquez drove in Pedroia with an RBI single. the score was tied at 3 at the end of the inning.

Pom remained in the game in the top of the 4th inning until he gave up a single to Swanson and a walk to Ozzie Albies. Hector Velazquez came into the game to relieve Pomeranz.  Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a single off Velazquez which loaded the bases.  Freddy Freeman hit an RBI single to left field to drive in Swanson.  Markakis hits a sacrifice fly to drive in Albies. The Braves retook the lead 5-3 at the end of the inning.  The two runs that scored in the inning were charged to Pomeranz.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, the Braves put in Jesse Biddle to relieve Sean Newcomb. Benintendi hit a solo home run off Biddle to center field to make the Sox deficit 5-4.

The Sox took the lead in the bottom 6th inning. Mookie Betts got on base with a single. Benintendi was hit by a pitch, bringing Moreland to the plate again.  Mitchy three bags hit his second triple of the game and drove in Betts and Benintendi to take the lead 6-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, Boston added two more runs to their lead. Eduardo Nunez reached base on a fielding error from Albies. Betts got on base via a walk to bring Benintendi to the plate. Benintendi hit a triple to right field to drive in both Nunez and Betts. Boston’s lead extended to 8-5.

After Joe Kelly pitched a clean eighth inning, Craig Kimbrel came into the game to shut the door in the ninth inning. He gave up a home run to right field to Ocuna making the Sox lead 8-6, but Kimbrel was able to notch the save and a win for the Red Sox.

Benintendi had a great day at the plate. He got three hits in four appearances with three RBIs. Benny Biceps also scored two runs.

Moreland finished the afternoon with two hits in five at-bats and picked up two RBIs.

Pedroia made a nice return to the lineup, he went 1 for 4 with a walk.

Swihart got in on the action as well. Blake finished the day with a hit in three appearances, and also got an RBI and a walk.

The bullpen has been on fire of late. Even though Velazquez allowed two runs to score, they were not charged to the bullpen.

Steven Wright came into the game in the 5th inning and had a dominant outing. He went three innings while only giving up two hits and one walk. He was able to pick up a strikeout while on the mound.
