The Boston Red Sox picked up another close victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday afternoon by a score of 2-1. Hector Velazquez was the starter for Boston and Jake Faria did the same for Tampa Bay. With the victory, the Red Sox win the series over the Rays and advance to 3-1 on the season, while the Rays fall to 1-3. The game was played at Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay, Fla.

In what proved to be yet another pitching battle, Boston’s starter Hector Velazquez performed admirably in his first start of the year. After a rough go early, with plenty of hard contact and a solo homerun by Brad Miller, the right-handed pitcher found his groove. He gave up just one run and struck out five batters over the course of 5 and 2/3 innings.

Boston answered Miller’s blast in the 2nd inning by way of a J.D. Martinez line drive single to left field, scoring Mookie Betts and tying the game 1-1 in the 5th. In the next inning, Rafael Devers came up clutch with bases loaded, with a hard line drive single to right field. Jackie Bradley Jr. scored easily on the play, making it a 2-1 contest, but Brock Holt was thrown out at the plate, hindering what could have been a much bigger inning.

The game was relatively uneventful until the bottom of the 9th, when Joe Kelly, who blew the lead in the first game, was summoned to close the contest. With runners on the corners with two outs and a 3-2 count on Denard Span, Kelly threw an 88-mph changeup in the dirt, which caught the left-handed hitter swinging to end the game.

The Boston Red Sox will take on the Miami Marlins at 7:10 p.m. eastern time tomorrow. It will be the first game of a two-game series at Marlins Park in Miami, Fla. Brian Johnson will take the hill for the BoSox and the Marlins have yet to announced their starter for the game.
