It was another day at the office for the Boston Red Sox, as they added an MLB record 68th win before the All Star break today with a 5-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. With the Yankees loss, they are now 4.5 games ahead in the AL East standings. They took 3 out of 4 in this series and ended the first half as good as they started it at 17-3.

Brian Johnson got the start today coming off the DL and he went 4.2 innings only allowing 2 hits, although one was a 2 run homer to Teoscar Hernandez. He only allowed those 2 runs and he struck out 5 batters.

From there it was lights out from the Sox bullpen, as Brandon Workman, Tyler Thornburg, Ryan Brasier, Heath Hembree, and Craig Kimbrel all came up with scoreless outings. Workman grabbed his 2nd win of the season and Kimbrel got his 30th save.

The offense wasn’t as lively as usual today as there were only 6 hits total, but they were big ones. Xander Bogaerts followed up his walk off grand slam with a solo shot in the first inning. It was his 16th of the season. Brock Holt added an RBI singe in the first inning.

The Red Sox didn’t score again until the 5th inning when Jackie Bradley Jr. brought home Sandy Leon with an RBI double and Bogaerts brought Bradley home with an RBI groundout. The 5th and final run was scored in the 6th inning when Brock Holt drove in Mitch Moreland with his 2nd RBI single of the game.

It has certainly been a special first half for this team. Now, the 5 Red Sox All Stars will catch their flights for DC, while the rest of the team will get a nice break. Play resumes Friday, when the Sox will kick off the 2nd half in Detroit against the Tigers.
