Red Sox Pull Off Miracle Comeback

This article had a much different tone when I first started writing it. Entering the bottom of the ninth, this game looked like more of the same. Nathan Eovaldi gave up five runs in five innings of work, the offense made stupid mistakes on the bases, and the bullpen wasn’t quite good enough to keep the Red Sox in the game.

All of that changed in the bottom of the ninth. Trailing 6-5, Mookie Betts started the rally by making it to first. Mitch Moreland then stepped up to the plate and had one of the greatest at-bats of the young season. Fouling off several pitches to stay alive, Moreland launched a double to center field, scoring Mookie all the way from first. After walking J.D. Martinez and Xander BogaertsRafael Devers stepped up to the plate to save the game. The young third baseman answered the call, launching the game-winning single to right field and giving the Red Sox a potential season-defining victory.

Moreland was the hero, and not just for what he did in the ninth inning. In his previous at-bat, the first baseman launched the game-tying home run into the Red Sox bullpen. Moreland has been phenomenal and one of the lone bright spots on this team throughout the short season.

This game started out like most of the other games this year. Nathan Eovaldi gave up five runs in the third inning, ruining an otherwise decent start. The bullpen came on in the sixth, and Colten Brewer, Marcus WaldenRyan Brasier, and Heath Hembree combined to allow one run in four innings of work.

The Red Sox deserve a lot of credit for getting in position to win this game in the first place. The Red Sox trailed 5-0 early but never gave up and continued battling until they were able to ultimately erase the deficit. Dustin Pedroia had a clutch single early the game and helped turn three separate double plays.
