Red Sox Lose a Heartbreaker to Astros

That one hurt. The Red Sox and the Houston Astros were the two hottest teams in the league entering Friday’s matchup, and Houston took the first game of the series. Rick Porcello pitched a gem through seven innings, but manager Alex Cora ultimately kept the former Cy Young winner in the game a little too long. Porcello gave up a two-run home run to George Springer in the eighth inning and Ryan Brasier allowed another run in relief. This three runs combined with an ineffective offense led to the Red Sox losing the series opener, 3-1.

Red Sox Lose Last-Second Heartbreaker

Rick Porcello took the loss, but he had a fantastic game nonetheless. Facing off against one of the best lineups in the league, Porcello tossed seven-plus innings of two-run ball. Porcello pitched seven scoreless innings before taking the hill for the eighth. Things didn’t go so well, as Porcello allowed a two-run homer to George Springer. Ryan Braiser took over, allowing an unearned run while walking two. Heath Hembree took over in the ninth, striking out all three batters he faced and giving the offense one last chance to tie the game.

Unfortunately, the offense couldn’t do much of anything. Outside of Christian Vazquez and Xander Bogaerts, the unit largely looked lifeless throughout the contest. Vazquez and Bogaerts combined for six of Boston’s nine hits, and Vazquez drove in Boston’s only run (Bogaerts scored).

There’s no sugarcoating it, the Red Sox offense was bad when it mattered most. The unit went 1-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 runners throughout the night. This simply cannot happen when you’re facing the best team in baseball, and this anemic effort ultimately ruined a gem from Rick Porcello.

Fortunately, the Red Sox have a chance to make it all better tomorrow. The Sox face off against the Astros in Fenway at 7:15 PM. Hector Velazquez will take the mound for the Red Sox.
