The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-3 at LECOM Park in Bradenton, Florida. This loss marks the first time the defending World Series champions have one in the loss column this year. The team’s undefeated Grapefruit League record is forever tarnished.
Brian Johnson, who is undoubtedly fighting for a roster spot, started the game for Boston. In two innings of work, the lefty surrendered one run on two hits. Bobby Poyner also tossed a relevant scoreless inning in the third.
The Sox only managed to accrue four hits in the game. Boston’s loudest knock of the game came off the scorching bat of Bryce Brentz. In the second inning, the minor league veteran crushed a solo-homer. He also drew two walks in three total plate appearances.
The Boston Red Sox will take on the Toronto Blue Jays at 1:07 p.m. eastern. Mike Shawaryn, a top-15 Red Sox prospect on MLB.com, is slated to start the game. It will take place at Dunedin Stadium in Dunedin, Florida.
