This has been a forgettable start to the 2019 season, to say the least. Friday’s game was humiliating for the homerun-friendly Red Sox pitching staff. The D’backs defeated the Red Sox 15-8 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. They did their damage behind five homers, including two from Ketel Marte.
Rick Porcello looked poised to bounce back from his rough first start — at least, insofar is the first few innings went. The game was knotted at 1-1 heading into the fourth inning. The D’backs scored four runs in the 4th, two runs in the 5th, and seven runs in the 6th. Porcello exited the game after 4 and 2/3 innings of seven-earned run baseball. He struck out five and walked three.
Brian Johnson did not fare any better when he came into relieve Porcello. In 1 and 1/3 innings, the lefty allowed seven earned runs. Unsurprisingly, the Red Sox announced he conveniently has been placed on the Injured List following the performance.
On the offensive side, the Red Sox had a fine day. They compiled 12 hits, including a homer from Mookie Betts (2) and Mitch Moreland (2). Blake Swihart also continued to mount his case as the team’s starting catcher. He reached base on a single and double.
