Red Sox Farm Report: April 8, 2019

The Boston Red Sox had the day off, and so did half of the minor league affiliates. Both the Portland Sea Dogs and Greenville Drive had their games postponed by weather, meaning the Pawtucket Red Sox and Salem Red Sox were the only teams to take the field. The teams combined to go 1-1, with Pawtucket pulling out the victory.

Red Sox Farm Report: April 8, 2019

Pawtucket Red Sox vs Buffalo Bisons

·         Final: 5-2 Win

·         Josh.Ockimey: 1-3, HR

·         Tony Renda: 2-4, 2B

·         Ryan Weber: 4 IP, 2 ER, 2 K, 0 BB

The Michael Chavis at second base experiment continued for the second consecutive night. While the top prospect was quiet with the bat (0-3), Chavis didn’t make an error and appears to be handling second base duties as well as one could hope. First baseman Josh Ockimey displayed his impressive raw power, launching a two-run homer in the top of the eight. Ockimey has great power but has yet to harness it with any consistency.

Ryan Weber earned the start, pitching an unremarkable four innings of two-run ball. Travis Lakins came on in relief and put together what was easily the best outing of his young season. The former started tossed two innings of scoreless relief, striking out three while walking just one and allowing one hit. Should injury strike the major league bullpen, Lakins will probably be the first reliever to earn a spot in the majors.

Portland Sea Dogs vs Binghamton Rumble Ponies

·         Postponed

It snowed in Portland. On April 8th. As someone who works in the City, this is frustrating for a wide variety of reasons.

Salem Red Sox vs Lynchburg Hillcats

·         Final: 5-2 Loss

·         Ryan Fitzgerald: 2-4

·         Tanner Nishioka: 1-2, 1 BB

·         Daniel Gonzalez: 5.2 IP, 3 ER, 3 K, 3 BB

It was a very boring day for the Salem Red Sox. The High-A roster dropped their third game of the season as the offense didn’t hit a single extra-base hit throughout the contest. Shortstop Ryan Fitzgerald was the closest thing to a star, recording two singles and driving in one of Salem’s two runs. First baseman Pedro Castellanos continued his slow start to the season, going 0-4 with two strikeouts.

Daniel Gonzalez earned the start on the mound and came one out away from earning a quality start. The righty threw 5.2 innings, allowing three runs while striking out three and walking three. Eduard Bazardo handled the rest, pitching 2.1 innings while allowing two runs (one earned). Bazardo currently has a 1.69 ERA in 5.1 innings of work with three strikeouts and three walks.

Greenville Drive vs Augusta GreenJackets

·         Postponed

Greenville and Augusta postponed Game One of their three-game series due to an incoming rain storm. At least it wasn’t snow.
