After a low scoring, twelve-inning marathon in the series opener against the Baltimore Orioles, game 2 was very different from the first inning. Eduardo Rodriguez improved to 8-1 with another solid outing. The Orioles pitching staff helped Boston score runs in the middle innings but the Sox brought their big bats to Camden Yards as they hit two home runs in the game.  While Craig Kimbrel did not have a great inning out of the bullpen, he nailed down the threat and a series win with a 6-4 victory tonight.

E-Rod had another solid outing. He only surrendered two runs through 5.2 innings.  In total Rodriguez gave up eight hits and two walks while recording four strikeouts.  He used his changeup as his out pitch. The changeup had extra life to it as the velocity reached 90 mph as it dropped out of the zone to produce a swinging strike out at times.

In the bottom of the first inning, Baltimore got the scoring started early. Eddy gave up a solo home run to Joey Rickard to left field to put the O’s up 1-0.

In the top of the 2nd inning, Rafael Devers responded back with a big swing. After Xander Bogaerts drew a walk, Raffy Big Stick deposited a two-run home run into the right-center field seats to put the Sox up    2-1.

After Devers was only able to get 6 hits in his last 40 plate appearances(.150), he’s been heating up this week with an 8 for 28(.285) performance.

Andrew Benintendi extended Boston’s lead with a solo home run to center field in the top of the third inning. Benny’s hit his 12th home run of the season which extended the lead to 3-1.

Baltimore responds with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Rickard got on base with a walk. Danny Valencia drives in Rickard with a single to centerfield.

The Oriole pitching staff began to fall apart in the top of the fourth inning. Brock Holt, Christian Vazquez, and Eduardo Nunez all hit singles off of Oriole starter David Hess.  Benny Biceps drove in Holt with a walk.  Reliever Miguel Castro came into the game in relief of Hess and gave up a balk to walk in Vazquez.  After J.D. Martinez earned a walk off of Castro, Mitch Moreland grounded into a double play to end the inning.  Boston extended their lead to 5-2 at the end of the inning.

Boston added on in the fifth inning. Bogey hit a single into right field, and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch from Castro. Now with Holt at the plate, Castro intentionally walked Brock to put runners at first and second. Vazquez drove in X with a single into left field, and extended the Red Sox lead to 6-2.

Hector Velazquez came into game in relief of E-Rod with two outs in the sixth inning. He gave up two hits and a walk but was able to hold the Baltimore scoreless during his outing.

Zach Britton made his season debut in the seventh inning after rupturing his Achilles tendon. He gave up three walks while picking up one strike out.

Joe Kelly came into a high leverage situation in the seventh inning. After Velazquez gave up singles to Adam Jones and Manny Machado, he then walked Valencia to load the bases. Kelly came into the seventh inning with two outs and induced a ground ball out of Jonathan Schoop and got Jones out at home on a force play.

Matt Barnes came into the game in the eighth inning, he only gave up one walk and picked up a strikeout in a scoreless outing.

The ninth inning was sloppy from Kimbrel. Craig gave up two walks to Valencia and Schoop. Mark Trumbo hit a double to right field to score Valencia and Schoop to draw Baltimore closer at 6-4. Kimbrel closed the game out after striking out Pedro Alvarez who came into the game as a pinch-hitter.

The Red Sox got away with some shaky pitching on Tuesday nights match up. Boston also committed two errors. Good thing they were able to capitalize on Baltimore’s mistakes. It was not pretty, but they got the series win and will be going for the sweep on Wednesday.
