Well, it didn’t take long for the Red Sox to jump ahead of the last place Royals on Friday. Actually, it took only 3 pitches before Mookie Betts hit a leadoff home run, his 22nd of the season and the 100th of his young career.
The Sox weren’t done in the first. They added 3 more runs on a couple of RBI singles by Brock Holt and Sandy Leon to make the score 4-0.
In the top of the second inning, a pair of 2 run homers by MLB home run and RBI leader JD Martinez and Xander Bogaerts put the Sox ahead 8-0.
That would be more than enough for Chris Sale, who had another brilliant outing tonight. He threw 6 innings of 1 run ball while striking out 12 batters while earning his 9th win of the season and the 100th win of his career. He has been absolutely dominant in his past 6 starts, going 4-1 with a 1.10 ERA and 66 strikeouts in that span.
Other highlights in this game included a 3 hit game for the newest Red Sox Steve Pearce who had 2 doubles and an RBI. Also, we saw the Red Sox debut of Tyler Thornburg, who hasn’t pitched since 2016 with the Brewers. He threw 1 inning and gave up 1 hit and 1 run in his debut.
After a cakewalk of a win tonight, the team will look for their 5th win in a row tomorrow evening behind David Price.
