According to Boston Globe’s Alex Speier, the Boston Red Sox’ top prospect first baseman Michael Chavis has been handed an 80-game suspension for testing positive for a PED known as Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone.
MLB Pipeline’s 80th-ranked prospect was battling an oblique injury and was expected to miss a few weeks to begin the season in Portland. With the suspension, Chavis will be unable to return to the team until June.
In a statement posted by the 22-year-old on Twitter, he accepts the punishment handed to him by the Minor League Drug Program but is confused on how the drug got in his system.
“The only thing I know is that I would never, and have never, purposely taken any prohibited substance in my entire life,” Chavis said on Twitter.
The Red Sox 2014 1st-round draft pick blasted 31 homeruns between Single-A Salem and Double-A Portland last season. It was a breakout campaign for the youngster.
