Marcus Wilson, Prospect Acquired in Blake Swihart Trade, Promoted to Portland Sea Dogs

22-year old outfielder Marcus Wilson, the prospect acquired in the Blake Swihart trade, is climbing his way through the system. According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, Wilson is set to join the Portland Sea Dogs after a successful run with the High-A Salem Red Sox.

Marcus Wilson Promoted to Portland Sea Dogs

Wilson has been on an absolute tear with the High-A Salem Red Sox. Through 45 games, the righty has compiled a .342/.413/.603 slash line with and accompanying 186 wRC+. He was June’s Minor League Player of the Month and continued his success into July. While his .452 BABIP suggests that some portion of his success was unsustainable, he’s still managed to make great contact throughout his time with the Salem Red Sox.

For what it’s worth, this won’t be Wilson’s first time in Portland. The outfielder started his Red Sox career with the Sea Dogs, but struggled during a limited sample. In 19 games, Marcus Wilson recorded an underwhelming .161/.307/.266 slash line with a 69 wRC+. Prior to joining the Red Sox, he spent time with the Arizona Diamondbacks’ AA affiliate. During his time with Arizona, the righty posted a .235/.350/.529 slash line with an accompanying 153 wRC in 12 games. This shows he’s at least flashed the ability to match up against AA-level competition and could develop into a fourth outfielder if everything breaks right.

Wilson has shown some potential since being traded, but the same cannot be said for Blake Swihart. Swihart’s appeared in just 30 games for the Diamondbacks and hasn’t looked particularly good when given playing time. The former top prospect currently owns an underwhelming .141/.191/.281 slash line with a corresponding 18 wRC+. He’s striking out in 39.7% of his at-bats and walking just 5.9% of the time. Additionally, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy, as the catcher suffered yet another injury shortly after joining the team.
