The Boston Red Sox have confirmed Boston Sports Journal’s Sean McAdam’s report that the team’s top pitching prospect Jay Groome will undergo Tommy John surgery on his left elbow Tuesday, May 15.

The left-handed hurler began the season on the disabled list with a flexor strain in the elbow. Originally, it was anticipated he was only going to miss a short amount of time but that is obviously not the case anymore.

Michael Chavis, who was the only other consensus top-100 prospect in the Red Sox’ farm system, was suspended 50 games earlier in the year for violating MLB’s PED policy.

Groome was ranked the 78th-best prospect in baseball heading into the season by Baseball Prospectus. He was also the first-round pick for Boston in the 2016 draft.
