The Boston Red Sox have placed Dustin Pedroia back on the disabled list retroactive to May 30th with knee inflammation. He was a last-minute scratch in Friday night’s game with knee soreness.

The news comes only a handful of hours after the Red Sox announced they had put Mookie Betts on the 10-Day DL. Moreover, the second basemen had just returned to the team last week after missing a majority of the first two months of the season.

Sam Travis has been called up in place of Betts and Bobby Poyner will do so for Pedroia. Boston will carry a three-man bench and an eight-man bullpen for the time being. Eduardo Nunez and Brock Holt should see playing time in his absence, though perhaps Blake Swihart gets a chance at second at some point.
