With a little help from the bats of J.D. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts, the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 in the first of a four-game series at Fenway Park. David Price (4-4) struck out eight in a complete game with the O’s Kevin Gausman (3-3) went 4 and 2/3rds innings, giving up six runs and eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Martinez drilled a two-run home run to center field in the first inning before Bogaerts blasted a three-run shot over the Green Monster in the fifth inning. Blake Swihart, who recently requested a trade from the Red Sox, pinch-hit for Martinez in the bottom of the 7th but grounded to second. Andrew Benintendi also drove in a run in the bottom of the 5th for his 23rd RBI of the season.
Just about everyone in Fenway Park got to their feet as Price took the mound to start the top of the 9th inning. The O’s Andrew Susac doubled to left to begin the inning. Trey Mancini and Adam Jones both fouled out. Price needed just one more out to get the shutout. Red Sox fans took a collective breath, then groaned as the next batter, Manny Machado, hit a two-run shot off one of the advertisements over the Green Monster making the game 6-2. The game ended with the next batter as Jonathan Schoop flied out to center.
Drew Pomeranz (1-1) will take the mound for Boston Friday night at 7:10pm at Fenway Park, squaring off with the O’s Alex Cobb (0-5).
