The Boston Red Sox entered Thursday’s game on a serious hot streak. They had won each of their previous four games and were looking to complete the sweep against the Tampa Bay Rays. Unfortunately, the momentum came to a stunning halt as the Red Sox couldn’t overcome their slow start and lost 6-3.

Red Sox Lose Series Finale, 6-3

Rick Porcello had a start to forget, as he put out one of his worst outings of the season. Porcello loaded the bases in each of the first two innings and ended up allowing five runs. It wasn’t a great outing by any means, but his defense sure didn’t help him.

J.D. Martinez took a horrible route on Porcello’s first batter, turning a fly out into a leadoff double. Later in the inning, catcher Sandy Leon dropped a ball on what would have been a force out at home. Had those two plays been made, Porcello might get out of the first inning with just one run allowed.

Porcello loaded the bases yet again in the second inning and allowed a two-run single. However, Eduardo Nunez botched the relay, dropping the ball and allowing an extra run to score. None of this is to say Porcello had a great start – he didn’t – but frankly, nobody came to play today. The collective poor performances put the Red Sox in a 5-0 hole after two.

Porcello went through the third rather quickly before giving up another run in the fourth. Brian Johnson took over from there, but the damage had already been done. For all intents and purposes, this game was over.

While Porcello struggled, Tampa Bay Rays ace Blake Snell was phenomenal. He started off his day by striking out Mookie Betts on three pitches, and he didn’t really slow down from there. He went six innings without allowing a run and striking out eight. While the Red Sox added two runs in the ninth to make it interesting, ultimately their comeback fell short.
