According to NBC Sports Boston’s Evan Drellich, Xander Bogaerts has been placed on the 10-day DL with a small crack in his ankle. Additionally, the Red Sox’ shortstop has been seen wearing a boot and is expected to be out for 10 to 14 days.

Bogaerts initially suffered the injury in the sixth inning of the Boston Red Sox Sunday afternoon win against the Tampa Bay Rays. Hauling in a relay throw from left fielder JD Martinez, Bogaerts lost the ball, which rolled towards the Rays dugout. The shortstop slid into the Rays dugout to keep the ball in play, but ultimately fell into the dugout himself. He landed awkwardly, and had to be assisted off the field.

Bogaerts had been off to a torrid start of the season, leading the American League in doubles (7) and leading the team in runs batted in (9). He’s been the most consistent bat on the team, and his production will certainly be something to monitor. Injuries have decreased his production in the past, most recently his wrist injury suffered in July of 2017.

Tzu-Wei Lin has been called up to take Bogaerts’ roster spot for the interim. He, along with Holt and Swihart, should see some playing time to fill in for the X-Man’s absence. With that said, it is conceivable that Eduardo Nunez will shift from second and play some shortstop and have Lin, Holt and Swihart as the second basemen.
