Boston Red Sox, Xander Bogaerts Nearing Massive Extension

The Boston Red Sox are reportedly close to locking up one of their brightest stars. According to Evan Drellich, the Red Sox and shortstop Xander Bogaerts are “close” to coming to terms on a new contract extension. Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reported that the deal will be a six-year, $120 million extension starting in the 2020 season. Bogaerts was scheduled to hit free agency following the 2019 season.

Xander Bogaerts, Boston Red Sox “Close” to Massive Extension

Bogaerts has been a major league regular since the 2013 season and has developed into one of the best shortstops in baseball. The homegrown talent finished the 2018 season with a .288/.360/.522 slash line and a 133 wRC+ while playing in 136 games. Bogaerts is a rising star and, at age 26, still has plenty of baseball left in his tank.

This news comes as something of a surprise, as Bogaerts was expected to test free agency at the end of the 2019 season. However, with a relatively dead market for the past two seasons, Bogaerts must have decided taking the guaranteed money was the better solution. Additionally, this move comes just a week after the Red Sox handed out a massive extension to team ace Chris Sale. Some people (read: me) expected Sale’s deal to mean the end of the Xander Bogaerts era, but that’s obviously not the case.

The Red Sox are starting to lock up their core, but they still have several big names hitting free agency. In just the next two years alone, Mookie Betts, Rick Porcello, Jackie Bradley Jr., Mitch Morelandand Steve Pearce are all expected to hit free agency. On top of that, superstar slugger J.D. Martinez could opt-out of his contract following the 2019 season. The Red Sox won’t be done writing checks, but it’s always great to see Boston investing in one of their brightest young stars.
