The Houston Astros defeated the Boston Red Sox 7-3 on Saturday night. It was another disappointing game for Boston, which fall to 23-22 on the season. They’re dangerously close to the teeter of the .500 mark.
Boston got down big early and really never recovered. Hector Velazquez, the team’s spot starter, surrendered 5 runs in one-third of an inning. Obviously, this dismantled much of the Red Sox hope of victory. Fortunately, Colten Brewer, Ryan Weber and Tyler Thornburg were each able to throw 2+ innings. The bullpen could have been more taxed heading into Sunday’s finale.
Offensively, the lineup collected only five hits. With that said, it was a delight to see Christian Vazquez continue his “best-hitting catcher in baseball” campaign. The diminutive backstop blasted his sixth round-tripper of the season. Somehow, someway, Vaz has an .894 OPS. What a world we live in.
The Boston Red Sox take on the Houston Astros at 1:05 p.m. eastern for the series finale. Chris Sale is expected to make the start for the Sox.
