The Red Sox faced off against the 2017 World Series Champions Houston Astros at Fenway Park tonight. The Sox took an early lead thanks to a solo home run by Xander Bogaerts, his 20th of the season. After tying the Sox in the 7th, the Astros tapped Red Sox reliever Kelly for three more runs in the eighth to give them a 6-3 lead.
The Red Sox showed offensive strength tonight. In addition to Bogaerts’ home run, J.D. Martinez was 1-3 with 2 RBIs, while Mookie Betts went 3-4. Boston’s bullpen was another story altogether. After Ryan Baiser surrendered a hit in the 7th, Kelly came in as relief. Kelly gave up four hits, three runs, and three earned runs while striking out only one in the eighth. Tonight’s loss marks Kelly’s second loss of the season.
The Red Sox still have the best record in baseball with a 97-45 record for a .683 winning percentage. They take on the Astros again Saturday at Fenway Park at 4:05 EST. Eduardo Rodriguez (12-3) will face off against the Astros’ Charlie Morton (13-3).
