Bobby Dalbec Promoted to Pawtucket Red Sox

Boston Red Sox third base prospect and Baseball America's top-100 Bobby Dalbec has been promoted to the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox.

One of the Boston Red Sox‘ top prospects is on the move. According to MLB Pipeline, the Red Sox have promoted Bobby Dalbec from the Portland Sea Dogs to the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox. This is Dalbec’s first time in AAA, as the third baseman has spent the entirety of 2018 with Portland. Dalbec is currently the third-ranked prospect according to SoxProspects.com

Bobby Dalbec Earns Promotion

If everything breaks right, Dalbec has the chance to be an annual 30-homer guy. The third baseman has some of the best raw power in the game and can absolutely destroy a ball when he hits it square. Through 105 games, Dalbec has 20 home runs, a .454 slugging percentage, and a 142 wRC+. However, he struggles to make consistent contact as evidenced by his 25.1% strikeout rate and .234 batting average. He’s an above-average defender, but he doesn’t have a clear path to the majors with Rafael Devers already locked-in as the third baseman of the present and future.

Even though this move shows that Dalbec is getting closer to the majors, don’t expect him to be in the pros any time soon. Dalbec is still a raw product offensively and needs a little more time to work on making more consistent contact. The Boston Red Sox are something of a mess right now, but the offense isn’t their major problem. If the season completely goes south, Dalbec could see time as a September call-up in something of an extended audition. He won’t ever be good enough to usurp Devers, but he might be Boston’s 2020 first baseman if he can make an early impression.

Dalbec initially joined the organization as a fourth-round pick in the 2016 June Amateur Draft. Dalbec initially debuted with the Low-A Lowell Spinners before joining the Greenville Drive in 2017. He’s yet to spend more than one year at any given level and managed to appear in two levels in both 2018 and 2019.
