Mike Yastrzemski, Grandson of Red Sox Legend, Hits Walk-Off Home Run

The Boston Red Sox just lost a heartbreaking series against the Baltimore Orioles, but fans can take solace in San Francisco. During last night’s action, Mike Yastrzemski hit a walk-off home run for the San Francisco Giants. Yastrzemski, of course, is the grandson of former Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski.

Mike Yastrzemski Hits Walk-Off Home Run

Yastremski’s home run came in a 3-2 victory over the New York Mets to move San Francisco to 50-50 on the season. The home run was Yastrzemski’s only hit of the night, but the 28-year old made his shot count. Despite entering the season with relatively low expectations, San Francisco’s recent hot streak has them just 2.5 games out of the Wild Card.

Yastrzemski wasn’t a noteworthy prospect but has nonetheless managed to find success at the major league level. Since joining the major leagues, the lefty has recorded a .259/.303/.500 slash line with an accompanying 105 wRC+. His .308 BABIP (batting average on balls in play) suggests these results are sustainable and he’s shown signs of power with nine home runs and a .241 ISO.

In a strange example of just how small a world it is, Stats by STATS dug up an interesting fact regarding Yastrzemski’s home run. According to the tweet, the last Giant to hit a walf-off blast in their first MLB season was Al Gallagher against Bob Priddy. Priddy also allowed two home runs to Carl Yastrzemski during his career.

Mike Yastrzemski is having a fine rookie year, but he probably won’t ever match his grandfather’s accolades. Carl Yastrzemski was one of the greatest players in the history of both the Red Sox and the game of baseball itself. Throughout his 23 years in the league, Yastrzemski won MVP, Triple Crown, three batting titles, seven Gold Gloves, and an astounding 18 All-Stars. Throughout the course of his career, Yastrzemski posted a .285/.379/.462 slash line and finished with 452 home runs, 646 doubles, and 3,419 hits.
