It feels wrong to start this recap with anything other than sending thoughts and prayers to David Ortiz and his family. Last night, it was reported that the beloved future Hall of Famer was shot in the back at a nightclub in the DR. Fortunately, recent updates suggest he is in stable condition after surgery. We will keep you updated on developments.

Anyway, on a substantially less serious note, the Boston Red Sox lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. The team forfeited the series with the loss, dropping three of four games. Boston falls to 34-32 after the contest.

Eduardo Rodriguez got off to a rocky start. The southpaw allowed three runs in the first two innings but somewhat calmed down as the game continued. In total, E-Rod went 5 and 2/3 innings of 4 earned run baseball. He also struck out seven and walked two batters.

Offensively, though the team was held to one run and eight hits, Marco Hernandez and Jackie Bradley Jr. stood out. Hernandez, who was called up over the weekend, went two for four on the afternoon. He is off to a nice start with four hits (two of which are doubles) in his first two MLB games since 2017. Meanwhile, JBJ’s hot streak endures, as the center fielder also went two for four. He has raised his OPS to .631.

The Red Sox will stay at Fenway to host the Texas Rangers. Surprisingly, this series will be a battle for the second wild card. Chris Sale opposes Mike Minor and his 2.55 ERA in Game One.
