Portland Sea Dogs Recap: Some Offense Would Be Nice

With the Old Port Fest just a 20 minute walk away, the Portland Sea Dogs attempted to give baseball fans a festivity of their own. However, the offense simply couldn’t get out to their own way. The pitchers, by and large, did their job, but ultimately couldn’t overcome an offensive performance which mustered just two runs in 12 innings.

Portland Sea Dogs Recap: Some Pitching, No Offense

This game was a pitchers’ duel from the start. Daniel McGrath took the mound for the Sea Dogs while the Bowie Baysox countered with Alex Wells. Wells entered the game with a 1.62 ERA in eight AA starts, so the Sea Dogs had to bring their A-game.

They ultimately couldn’t. The Sea Dogs only had one hit – a Tate Matheny double – entering the bottom of the sixth. Deiner Lopez technically got a leadoff double to start the sixth, but it was an easy fly ball which the right fielder simply lost in the sun. Still, the Sea Dogs capitalized on the mistake as Bobby Dalbec drove in Lopez two batters later for the games’ first run.

The Sea Dogs had a few opportunities but couldn’t drive anyone home until the 11th inning. Jarren Duran doubled in his fifth at-bat to tie the game in the bottom of the 11th. Unfortunately, the rest of the order could not bring Duran home to win the game.

Daniel McGrath, meanwhile, had a strong start for the Sea Dogs. The lefty pitched five scoreless innings, striking out five while allowing just two walks. He loaded the bases in the third inning but managed to pitch his way out of the jam. Kevin Lenik took over for McGrath, allowing one run in two innings of work. Jake Cosart followed that up by pitching two scoreless frames. Matthew Gorst took the mound for extra innings, loading the bases in the 10th but ultimately getting out without allowing a run. His luck wouldn’t last, as Gorst allowed three runs in the next 1.1 innings of work.
