In what comes as the least surprising news of perhaps the history of ever, the Boston Red Sox have elected to pick up Chris Sale‘s club option for the 2019 season. The option is for $15M and represents a slight increase from the $12.5M he received last season.
Sale, who fired the final strike for the 2018 World Series team, pitched to the tune of a Cy Young-caliber 2.11 ERA and 1.98 FIP in 158 innings in 2018. He did, however, deal with injury issues late in the season and was then hospitalized due to a stomach affliction in the postseason.
He is one of many Red Sox stars who will earn salary bumps in the offseason but his comes sooner than his arbitration teammates. The southpaw is set to be a free agent after the 2019 season.
