The Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Mets 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, Boston moves to 103-47 while New York drops to 69-80 with the loss. Chris Sale started the game for the Red Sox and Jacob deGrom did so for the Mets. The game was played at Fenway Park in Boston.
This was quite the pitching matchup, featuring two of the best pitchers in the game. Sale, who is weaning himself into action after an injury sustained in July, only went the allotted three innings. The plan was for the southpaw to just go the three innings after getting through just one inning in his previous start. He looked absolutely wonderful and no one scored against him. In fact, he allowed just one baserunner to reach in his abbreviated appearance, surrendering a lone hit.
There was also a scary moment in the 6th inning when star right fielder Mookie Betts had to leave the game with an apparent side injury. It looked like Betts sustained the affliction trying to make a throw to home plate. According to reports, he should be okay and will likely play in Tuesday’s game against the New York Yankees.
Brock Holt continued his torrid and heroic week in the third inning with a two-run homer off the vaunted deGrom. At the time, it propelled the squad to a 3-0 lead over the Mets.
The Boston Red Sox will take on the New York Yankees at 1:05 p.m. eastern on Tuesday afternoon. Nathan Eovaldi is expected to make the start for Boston, opposing J.A. Happ for New York. It will be the first of a three-game set between the division rivals. Boston’s magic number to clinch the division is two.
