The Boston Red Sox managed to squeeze out only four hits, all singles, as their bats fell silent at Fenway Park. Second baseman Ian Kinsler was the only Sox player to get more than one hit.
Red Sox pitcher William Cuevas (0-1), who started his first game of his career tonight, was tagged for three hits and two earned runs in two innings while striking out four. Cuevas was credited with the loss. Following Cuevas was a conga line of relievers including Robby Scott, who surrendered a three-run home run to the Mets’ Jay Bruce in the third. Along with Brian Johnson, Trevor Thornburg, and Drew Pomeranz, the Red Sox gave up nine hits and eight runs.
The Red Sox play the New York Mets again Saturday at 4:05 at Fenway Park. Rick Porcello (16-7) will start for the Red Sox while Corey Oswald (3-2) will start for the Mets. It will be the second of a three-game series against the Mets this weekend in Boston.
