When you win over 100 games in a season, you pick up a few of them on screw-ups by the other team. Tonight was one of those games.

Eduardo Rodriguez started the game by throwing 6 innings of 1 run ball and striking out 7. However, the bullpen couldn’t hold on to get him a win.

In the 8th inning, Bobby Poyner came in and allowed a home run to Lourdes Gurriel Jr.. Then Joe Kelly came in and did not record an out. He allowed a walk, a single, and then hit 2 batters to force the tying run in.

With the score 3-3, Xander Bogaerts got a double and then came in to score when Blake Swihart hit a pop up that was dropped by the second baseman Yangervis Solarte to make the score 4-3.

Then, Craig Kimbrel came in for a quick, shutdown 9th inning for his 40th save of the season.

Both J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers hit solo home runs for the Sox. The other run scored on an Ian Kinsler sacrifice fly. With his 41st homer of the season, Martinez is now tied with Khris Davis for the Major League lead.

Next, the Red Sox will play the Mets this weekend, and they will look to build on the 10.5 game lead and put the AL East “race” to bed.
