Red Sox record: 41-19 (1st AL East)
Record by opponent this week:
3-0 against the Toronto Blue Jays
2-2 against the Houston Astros
Hitter of the Week: Andrew Benintendi
Benintendi got off to a rough start this year, but he sure has come back with vengeance in his eyes for the baseball. Benintendi had 29 at bats this week and hit 3 home runs, 2 doubles and a triple. He had a slash line of .379/.439/.828. His OPS was a 1.265 over this past week. He drove in 8 runs, scored 6 runs and walked 3 times. He did strike out 6 times and left 8 men on base, but overall it was a great week for Benintendi.
Starting Pitcher of the Week: Eduardo Rodriguez
Eduardo Rodriguez has really put together a nice season so far. He had a solid outing this week, throwing 6.2 innings giving up 2 earned runs for an ERA of 2.70. He only walked 1 batter and gave up 3 hits in the process. He was dominant in punching out 7 batters and throwing 70 of his 100 pitches for strikes. His WHIP was a minuscule 0.60, and no matter how you slice it, he had a great week.
Reliever of the Week: Matt Barnes
Barnes is really starting to put his doubters to rest. He threw 4 innings this week and only gave up 2 hits. He struck out 4 batters and stranded all 3 of the runners he inherited. He collected 2 holds and threw 35 of his 51 pitches for strikes. Matt Barnes is a different guy when he consistently throws strikes.
Hitting Disaster of the Week: Rafael Devers
Devers is barely 21, and he is showing that there will be growing pains. In 24 at bats, Devers only managed a hit in 4 of them. He did not drive in any runs and left 9 runners on base. He also struck out in 9 of his 21 at bats, and that’s just not going to do it. His slash line was an abysmal .167/.192/.208. Let’s hope this disaster gets better soon.
Pitching Disaster of the Week: Brian Johnson
Sure, he only pitched 2/3 of an inning, but he had 2 appearances. He only gave up 2 runs but also allowed 4 hits in his 2/3 of an inning. That’s a 26.87 ERA and a 5.97 WHIP. It’s a small sample, but two outings and only getting 2/3 of an inning done will land you here every time.
Highlight Reel Play of the Week: Christian Vazquez and Andrew Benintendi Go Yard
The Red Sox lost two games to the Houston Astros, and what they needed to do was make a statement against the defending World Series champions. Christian Vazquez hit a game tying home run, and Benintendi followed that up with a home run of his own. The Red Sox went on to split the series, and this was a turning point for them.
Fun With Numbers: 26
This is the number of outs on the bases the Red Sox have had this year. It leads the MLB. We thought it was bad coaching, but it might be something deeper than that.
Story Lines to Watch:
The Struggles of Devers
Patrick Green details the struggles that Devers has been having this year. We saw a young kid light the world on fire at the end of the year last year and he looked like he belonged. His struggles this year might tell a different story.
Time to Move on from Drew Pomeranz
The Red Sox notably moved on from Hanley Ramirez, but there is another player struggling mightily. Dave Latham details how the Red Sox should bump Pomeranz out of the rotation.
That’s it for this edition of the Red Sox Had a Week! Tune in next week for some more fun!
