Not many Red Sox fans expected a blowout on Sale day, however, that’s exactly what happened on Sunday when the Sox dropped the series finale against the Atlanta Braves 7-1. Chris Sale had an unusually bad outing,  Mike Foltynewicz took a no-hitter into the 6th inning until Andrew Benintendi broke it up in the bottom half of the inning.

Although Chris racked up 8 strikeouts during his outing, he only lasted 4.1 innings. He gave up 6 earned runs on five hits and walked three batters. Sale has not allowed more than three earned runs in all of his outings this season until Sunday.

Foltynewicz was in control for the entire game. He went 7 strong innings of work, only giving up three hits, and one earned run. He did struggle with his command at times as he gave up three walks. Mike finished his outing with seven strikeouts. Foltynewicz had not pitched more than six innings until Sunday’s start.

In the top of the 2nd inning, Chris gave up a walk to Nick Markakis and a single to Kurt Suzuki. Tyler Flowers came up next and hit a three-run home run into the Green Monster seats, giving the Braves an early 3-0 lead.

After putting together two scoreless innings, the Braves would get to Sale for three more runs. Dansby Swanson would draw a walk off of Sale. Swanson would move up to second base on a passed ball by Sandy Leon. Charlie Culberson would single to Benintendi to drive in Swanson to make the score 4-0. Culberson would go to second base on a throwing error by Jackie Bradley Jr. Culberson would move up to third after Ozzie Albies grounded out to Dustin Pedroia at second. Ronald Acuna earns a walk off of Sale, bringing Freddie Freeman to the plate. Freeman drove in Culberson and Acuna on an RBI double. Freeman stopped at third base because of a bad throw by JBJ.  Atlanta extended their lead to 6-0 at the end of the inning.

Benny Biceps would break up Foltynewicz no-hitter with a double off of the Monster.  Mitch Moreland would turn into Mitchy three bags again as he drove in Benintendi with an RBI triple to right field. Boston’s deficit was cut to 6-1.

The Braves would add on one more run in the top of the ninth inning.  Preston Tucker would hit a single to left field. Freeman drew a walk. Tucker would move over to third on a force out at second. Suzuki hit a single to left field to drive in Tucker and extended their lead to 7-1.

Tucker was an injury replacement for Acuna in right field.  Acuna got hurt while running down the first base line for an infield single.

Brian Johnson came into the game in relief for Sale in the 5th inning. He lasted 2.2 innings, only giving up one hit and one walk.

Hector Velazquez came in and allowed one earned run on three hits. He gave up two walks and picked up two strikeouts in 2 innings of work.

Mookie Betts was taken out of the line up before the game on Sunday, Betts left with left side pain.
