Betts and Benintendi back up Porcello’s strong start in 6-3 win
On Saturday night the Sox won game 3 of a 4 game series against the Baltimore Orioles. Tonight’s matchup between Rick Porcello and Dylan Bundy started as a pitching duel. In the middle innings, however, Rafael Devers got Boston’s offense started. Mookie Betts and Andrew Benintendi hit back to back home runs to separate themselves from the O’s, and Benintendi put the game away later on. The bullpen put together a scoreless outing and Craig Kimbrel slammed the door in the ninth inning.
Porcello had a strong outing. He finished his start by tying his season high in strikeouts, with nine in total. He put in six strong innings of work, giving up six hits, three earned runs, and three walks. He threw the kitchen sink at the O’s line up, utilizing all of his pitches. His fastball topped out at 92 MPH and his slider peaked at 87 MPH.
Rick was rolling through the Orioles line up until the top of the 4th inning. He gave two walks and one hit, which loaded the bases. He gave up a sacrifice fly which put the O’s ahead 1-0.
Raffy came up in the bottom of the 4th and put the Sox back even with the O’s 1-1 after putting a ball into the seats of the Green Monstah.
The Sox put together a big inning in the bottom of the 5th. Sandy Leon hit a leadoff double to begin the inning. Jackie Bradley Jr. continues to struggle at the dish as he struck out; on three fastballs. Mookie came up with the big hit and hit a two-run jimmy jack to take the lead 3-1. Benny Biceps came up next and muscled a ball into the bullpen in right field. Boston lead 4-1 at the end of the inning.
Before Porcello exited the game in the 6th inning, he gave up a two-run home run to Pedro Alvarez to cut the Sox lead to 4-3.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, the Sox lead off the inning with two walks, setting the table for Benny Biceps to flex his muscles once again. He hit a single up the middle to score two runs. The Sox lead was pushed to 6-3.
The bullpen put up a combined scoreless outing. Joe Kelly relieved Rick in the 7th inning and collected two strikeouts. Matt Barnes came into the game in the 8th and also pitched a clean inning while picking up two strikeouts. Kimbrel pitched a clean inning as well and notched another save to seal the 6-3 victory.
JBJ’s struggles at the plate are becoming more and more concerning each day he is in the lineup. For as much defensive upside as Bradley provides, his lack of production at the plate is no longer being overlooked because of his glove. Jackie went 0 for 3 tonight, picking up two strikeouts and a walk.
