The Oakland A’s, the only team with a winning record against the Boston Red Sox this season, won the first game in a three-game series at Fenway Park Monday night. Sean Manaea (5-4) picked up the win for the A’s while Rick Porcello (5-0) took his first loss of the season.

The Red Sox led 2-1 going into the fourth inning before the A’s Matt Joyce homered off Porcello to start a three-run rally that put the A’s ahead 4-2 going into the fifth. The Red Sox nipped at the heels of the A’s in the seventh and eighth innings with home runs from Rafael Devers and J.D. Martinez, respectively. But home runs by A’s first baseman Matt Olson in the sixth, and left fielder Khris Davis in the eighth put the game too far out of reach for the Red Sox to grab.

After Porcello was pulled in the sixth inning Heath Hembree pitched the seventh, followed by Carson Smith in the eighth, and Brian Johnson in the ninth. The Red Sox are now in second place in the American League East, half a game behind the New York Yankees.

The Boston Red Sox face the Oakland A’s Tuesday at 7:10pm at Fenway Park. Daniel Mengden (2-4) will take the mound for the A’s against the Red Sox Eduardo Rodriguez (3-0).
