In a unanimous vote on Thursday, the Boston Public Improvement Commission has made it so Yawkey Way will be renamed Jersey Street. The street, which is located outside of Fenway Park, was named after former Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey.
Yawkey, who owned the team for 43 years, has been connected with racist ideologies and practices in his tenure. As such, the Boston Red Sox’ current ownership brass have been pushing to change the name. Their wish was granted and the street will return to its original name, Jersey Street.
The Public Improvement Commission reported that other businesses on the street were in favor of changing the name.
