Xander Bogaerts hit a grand slam in the second inning, increasing the Red Sox lead over the Rays from two to six. It was Bogaerts’ second home run of the season, and his second career grand slam. His first career grand slam came in September of 2015, also against the Rays.
The Rays took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Red Sox scored four in the bottom of the first ending the inning 4-2. The Bogaerts grand slam increased that lead to 8-2 in the second.
Rick Porcello picked up his second win of the season. He ran into trouble in the first inning after surrendering two runs but quickly regained control by retiring 20 out of 21 batters, 17 of them in a row. Overall, Porcello gave up three runs, six hits, and struck out seven.
J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers also hit home runs to add to the ten runs the Red Sox accumulated today. Martinez’s homer in the 7th inning had an exit velocity of 109.4, easily clearing the Green Monster, his first home run in a Red Sox uniform. Devers also hit his first home run of the season. Devers, who is only 21, hit .284 with ten home runs in his debut year last year.
The Boston Red Sox are currently in first place in the American League East, two games ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays. The Red Sox play the Rays at 1:05 Sunday before hosting the New York Yankees for a three-game series starting Tuesday, April 10th.
