What started as another sketchy David Price start against the Kansas City Royals – ended up being a laugher as the Red Sox piled on seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to nail down a 15-4 win against the Royals. The offense was lead by Mookie Betts and Andrew Benintendi.
Price did not have his command on the mound tonight and he ended his night allowing four runs on six hits. He ran his pitch count up early in the game which allowed him to only last 4.2 innings on Saturday. He allowed a home run to Lucas Duda in the 2nd inning to put Boston in an early 1-0 deficit. Price allowed more runs in the third inning. After giving up hits to Whit Merrifield and Jorge Bonifacio, Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez drove them in with a single by Moustakas and a sacrifice fly by Perez. Price put Boston in an early hole while the offense was struggling to respond at the time.
Boston’s luck would change in the top of the 5th inning. The Sox would finally break through behind a Betts single and a Benintendi walk. J.D. Martinez would hit a single up the middle to score Betts from second base – cutting the lead to 3-1 KC. Mitch Moreland would get on base after drawing a walk and Xander Bogaerts would hit a bases-clearing double into centerfield. Bogey’s double would score Benintendi, Martinez, and Moreland, to take the lead 4-3.
However – Price’s command continued to elude him in the bottom of the fifth inning. He would give up a hit to Merrifield and then go on to hit three batters in the inning: Perez, Moustakas, and Duda. When Duda was hit – it drew the score back even at 4-4.
Boston took the lead back in the seventh inning. Benintendi lead off with a walk, and then J.D. moved Benintendi to third with a double. Moreland drove in Benni on a sac fly to take the lead 5-4. X and Rafael Devers drew walks – and Vazquez drives in J.D. and Bogaerts on a single into center field, pushing the score to 7-4. Devers would be left on third.
In the eighth inning. Benni Biceps would flex his muscles with a solo home run to right field – pushing the Boston lead to 8-4.
In the top of the ninth is when the game officially became a laugher. Boston mounted a seven-inning rally that would secure a win. Devers and Sandy Leon both got on base with singles; with Devers on third base – Jackie Bradley Jr. drives in Raffi when grounds into a force out to add on to the lead 9-4. Betts drives home Jackie on a double to left field – Mookie advances to third on the throw back into the infield. Red Sox started pulling away at 10-4. Benintendi follows up with a double of his own to center field – driving in Betts and pushing the lead to 11-4. Blake Swihart enters the game to replace J.D. and drives in Benni to swell the lead to 12-4. Moreland gets on base with a single and Bogey draws a walk. With the bases loaded – Brock Holt draws a walk to walk in Swihart and extend the Red Sox huge lead to -13-4. Raffi comes up to the plate and draws a walk – adding on to make the lead 14-4. Leon hits a single to right field to score Bogey and cap off a seven run rally at 15-4.
Hector Velazquez entered the game and pitched a clean ninth inning to seal the win.
In total – Mookie and Benintendi lead the offense in Saturday night’s bludgening of the Royals. Mookie ended the night going 4-6 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Benintendi went 2-4 with four runs scored , four walks and two RBIs.
